Klondike Adventures hooked me with its entertaining Gold Rush setting and promise of building my own successful farm. Created by VIZOR APPS LTD., the game just drops you directly into a frosty world replete with eccentric residents, all before attacking you with chore after chore ad infinitum. I truly enjoy Farmville-style gameplay per se, so the game immediately appealed to me.

The gameplay is simple: clear land, plant crops, care for animals, and fulfill orders. The basic instructions from Kate teach you methods to gather beans and cow-food and to maintain buildings. The game displays its graphics in colorful cartoon visuals that maintain visual comfort. I enjoyed the little animations of the animals and the satisfying thunk sound when you clear a large obstacle.

But beneath the surface of this idyllic farming sim is a grind all too real. Energy is the limiting factor, and you’ll be running low on it quickly while clearing rocks, chopping down trees, and performing other basic tasks. This inevitably leaves you with the choice of: sit back and wait for your energy to replenish itself, or spend actual cash to buy more. The game is costless-to-play, but the energy system is very much geared towards making microtransactions feel more comfortable.

As much as the energy constraints, I still kept finding myself coming back to Klondike Adventures. There is something highly rewarding in watching your farm grow and prosper. New locations and events also keep coming into the game, bringing in new challenges and rewards. I also enjoyed uncovering more about the mysterious ends of the world, finding treasure, and befriending the multicolored people of the world. The thematic events are also a welcome addition to the play.

All in all, Klondike Adventures is a fun, interactive game with a nostalgic respite from today’s world to a time bygone. Be prepared for a grind, however, and for whether or not you’re willing to shell out to speed the process. Assuming you can make do with those limitations, however, you’ll find a quaint and absorbing farm adventure.
