Home & Emma

From the get-go, it charms your pants off with its art style and colorful characters in Clash of Critters. The hand-drawn style imbues each monster with personality so that the entire roster stands out as vibrant and memorable. Whether it's the fox in your hand being cheeky or a grumpy hedgehog crossing its arms, this visuals are dangerously cute and probably is actually what sells you on buying the game.

The core combat system here is simple and easy to get into, making it great for quick-fix gaming or family multiplayer. This so-called simplicity becomes a double-edged sword very quickly. When you realize after a couple of hours, the lack of strategic depth. Most matches boil down to pressing buttons as quickly and repeatedly as possible instead of hone your skills, while the variety that is being added via limited move pools for each critter isn't helping much with mastery. Also it had a much better combo system and environmental hazards that I feel would have made this experience so much more.

Clash of Critters is really in its element when playing local multiplayer matches. Violent four-player brawls quickly gathering friends and providing genuine laughs and memorable moments. While the assortment of mini-games and arena options are a nice change, the online framework seems incomplete. Matchmaking is sluggish and connection stability issues sometimes interrupt the stream of competitive.

The single-player campaign is a fair little introduction to the roster — albeit one with repetitive level design and dull AI opponents. While there are unlockable cosmetics and critter variants to encourage you playing more, the whole progression system feels overly grindy instead of rewarding. More game modes or a better story would have potentially prolonged solo players' playtime.

Clash of Critters is a nice looking party game that is fun in local multiplayer, but falls short on longevity. Great for an occasional game night with friends, but not a must-play for competitive depth or difficult single-player. If you provide what post-launch support and content updates need, it could turn this brawler filled with adorable critters into something genuinely amazing. At the moment, it's still a delightful but incomplete bundle worth looking at for its budget price.
