If you are a mobile gamer sick of hyper-casual “clickers” or overly complex RPGs, Clash of Critters (by Lilith Games) came as a great surprise. This game combines the rush of a pinball machine with creature collection to form an addictive loop you struggle mightily to put down.
The Pinball Machine is the main hook. Instead of the standard gacha mechanic of just hitting “open”, you physically launch a ball to hit bumpers and slots. At the core of economy is this tactile mini-game, which gives you everything from new creatures (Tataris) to upgrade candies. Getting paid on a jackpot slot machine is one great dopamine hit.
Highlights of the appearance are the “Tataris” in visual form. They shy away from generic monetarily-by-numbers monsters for goofy hand-drawn ones. Who would not want a Flameow cat, or a grumpy Mr Llama to top tier fighter? The change in appearance and personality elements of the evolution system totally throws players off. These cute and vivid character designs are so fabulous and terrific.
Then there is what does not work. Battles are light on "strategy" — more elemental-type matching (fire, water, grass) and auto-fighting with your squad. Basically, it is a Coin Master-like loop: you spin (launch balls), get resources, build your base and raid on others time to time. For those who dislike interruptions from PvP, the random "attacks" can prove a bit annoying. And this is the only one drawback that may affects the players’ experiences and feelings.
Tap for short bursts, you can have fun in Clash of Critters. It values your time, delivers a fresh tactile loop and is filled with character. It sure isn't a deep tactical RPG—you shouldn't go in expecting one. You pocket-made party with no-stress chaos.
