Home & Mina

Genesis War is a mobile turn-based strategy RPG by Meerkat Games, published by LINE Games and part of the classic Korean PC series The War of Genesis. The story is remade from the original— Princess Iyolin trying to take back her fallen kingdom (Pendragon), but this time placed in a character-collection structure for mobile. After spending a decent chunk of time with it, I can confirm you get the tedium sandwich above which is occasionally served in an ultimately edible way for fans of tactical RPGs.

One of the truest highlights of this game is its deep storytelling and world structure. With 50+ characters each with their backstories and reasons for being on the battlefield, there really is a story that makes sense here. The anime heading visuals and cinematic animations that are common in the genre, as well as Korean voice-acting for characters dial native to JRPG genres — something often not found on most mobile-RP games. Attacks may look simple, but the turn-based combat system rewards foresight in terms of character positioning and team composition; attribute weaknesses are important, as is terrain advantage. It's a real privilege for veterans of the original PC series to see classic characters and story arcs so carefully brought into treason.

The character pool system is long but makes a lot of it feel monetized. The tactical depth of E7 is often undermined by overpowered units able to brute-force encounters, and progression itself is frequently gated behind grinding or spending. The auto-battle mechanic is particularly parasitic: while it makes grinding more convenient, much of the tactile strategy that defines the genre becomes moot.

Genesis War works as a love letter to an RPG franchise, presenting gorgeous visuals set in the worlds of Korean fantasy and marrying thoughtful lore with genuinely interesting tactical combat. But the mobile-first design decisions, especially those centered on heavy gacha mechanics and auto-play systems, rob it of some things that once made this series special. It's definitely worth it for longtime fans. If you are a rookie looking for straight up tactical-RPG then the free-to-play model can get very annoying.
